Advantages, potential and limitation of nanofertilizers in agriculture and horticulture

The adequate nutrition of crops is essential to reach high yields and proper product quality. In particular, intensive cropping systems require the use of different technologies to ensure the balanced nutrition in the different phases of the crop, including initial establishment, vegetative growth and generative development. With this background, mineral nutrients are offered to the plants through traditional soil fertilization, seed treatments, fertigation systems and foliar applications. In the recent years the so called ‘nanofertilizers’ arose and promise increased performance in specific applications. In particular, it is indicated that nanofertilizers might penetrate plant tissues in a more fast and effective way. Nevertheless, scientifically, this topic is still underexplored. In this literature review advantages, potential and the possible limitations of the use of nanofertilizers are summarized.
